Mission Statement
The Chambersburg Area School District's comprehensive school counseling program provides students with developmentally appropriate services through individual, group and school-wide activities. This program works in partnership with families, school staff and the community to assist students in reaching their academic, personal/social and career potential.
Program Goals
Activities described in the counselors' basic job descriptions, separate departmental role descriptions and program scope and sequence are directed toward accomplishing one or more broad program goals as defined below. These goals are not listed in any priority order. Priorities vary from grade to grade, and even from student to student. The goals provide the ultimate measure of program success. They have been designed to benefit students first and foremost. The school counselors are but a part of the delivery system along with teachers, parents, agency representatives and others.
The nine national standards for school counseling programs as defined by the American School Counselor Program will serve as program goals.
1. Students will acquire the attitudes, knowledge and skills that contribute to effective learning in school and across the life span.
2. Students will complete school with the academic preparation essential in choosing from a wide range of substantial post-secondary options including college.
3. Students will understand the relationship of academics to the world of work and to life at home and in the community.
4. Students will acquire the skills to investigate the world of work in relation to knowledge of self and to make informed career decisions.
5. Students will employ strategies to achieve future career goals with success and satisfaction.
6. Students will understand the relationship between personal qualities, education, training and the world of work.
7. Students will acquire knowledge, attitudes and interpersonal skills to help them understand and respect themselves and others.
8. Students will make decisions, set goals, and take the necessary action to achieve their goals.
9. Students will understand safety and survival skills.
In addition, the following goals relate to services other than those offered directly to students:
10. Counselors will communicate with parents and significant others in the child's life in a timely fashion.
11. Counselors will consult with faculty and administration concerning student-related issues.
12. Counselors will maintain student records in accordance with state and federal regulations.
13. Counselors will maintain liaison relationships with outside agencies for purposes of collaboration concerning student needs.
