CVA
  • Is Virtual Learning Right for You?

While virtual learning is an environment where some students thrive, it is not equally suited to meet the needs of every student.  Traditional students in live classes get to know their fellow classmates and instructors by sharing personal interactions on a regular basis.  Live, virtual sessions are required for students in grades K-6; however, much of the coursework in CVA can be completed asynchronously, meaning students and instructors do not have to be logged into the class at the same time.

  • Qualities of an Online Learner

    Self-Motivated

    • Virtual learning is not the “easy” way out; online courses often require as much time and work as traditional face-to-face courses.

    • Students must be self-motivated to work independently with a legitimate reason for taking a virtual course.

    Independent, Interested, and Inquisitive

    • Virtual learning requires students to develop their own study habits, time management skills, and discipline to complete coursework without being prompted by a teacher.

    • Successful virtual learners enjoy new experiences, including learning how to learn online, and they naturally want to know more about the subject they are studying.

    Computer Literate

    • Students do not have to have advanced computer skills to succeed in a virtual class, but they should be comfortable with the internet and have basic keyboarding and computing skills.

    • Students must have the flexibility and ability to learn how to work with multiple learning platforms.
    • Being “tech savvy” using social media and mobile devices does not translate to success in an online course.

    Effective Communicator

    • Successful virtual learners are comfortable using messaging systems to communicate with others; they must be able to write clearly and maturely.

    • Students must be able to advocate for themselves if they encounter problems or do not understand concepts by reaching out to their teachers for help before falling behind in classes.
