National School Lunch Program
The Chambersburg Area School District offers meals to all students attending one of its schools. The district participates in the National School Breakfast Program(NSBP) and the National School Lunch Program(NSLP). The NSBP and NSLP are regulated by the federal government under USDA and Food and Nutrition Services(FNS). The regulations provided by USDA and FNS are updated every few years to assure that current medical and dietary guidelines are being followed.
So, What is a School Lunch?
The school lunch program offers five(5) basic components, which are Grains, Meat/Meat Alternate, Fruits, Vegetables, and Milk, as shown on the above chart. The student does not need to take all of the items, but the student does need to take at least three of the items, and one of those three items must be a fruit or a vegetable. The meals vary as the students move up through the grade levels.
